Dunki is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language comedy drama film directed and edited by Rajkumar Hirani, based on the illegal immigration technique. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, and Boman Irani. Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, Jio Studios, and Rajkumar Hirani Films, Dunki was released worldwide on 21 December 2023 to mixed reviews.

The plot follows Manu, an aged woman who runs away from a hospital in London and meets an immigration lawyer, Puru Patel, who connects her with Hardy, her ex-lover. In Laltu, Punjab, Hardy is ecstatic to receive Manu’s call and asks him to meet her in Dubai so that he can bring her back to India through “dunki.”

In 1995, Manu and her friends Buggu and Ballu, who live in Laltu, yearn to immigrate to London for a better life, but are unable to procure a visa. An ex-soldier named Hardy arrives in their village and promises to help them reach London as a return for his brother’s kindness. They enroll in an IELTS coaching class taught by Geetu Gulati, where they meet Sukhi, who wants to immigrate to London to save his ex-lover. Balli tells Sukhi that his ex has died by suicide, leading Sukhi to kill himself. Traumatized, Hardy promises to take Manu and Buggu to London himself through “dunki”.

However, a series of hilarious events cause them to be reprimanded by the court, and Hardy gets deported back to India. The film then resumes in 2020, where the four friends meet up in Dubai and try to leave for India via cargo containers. After a series of events, they get back to their hometown, where Manu realizes that Hardy had never married out of love for her. When Hardy proposes to her, she faints and dies, leaving Hardy grief-stricken.

The film ends with an epilogue that no visas were issued to travel to other countries.
